About Gateway

Resident conference 2008 #5

Why Gateway?

We chose the name Gateway for three reasons, which draw on our history and describe our ambition.

  • Tower Hamlets has been the traditional 'gateway' for migrant communities entering the UK.
  • We operate within east London, which forms part of the Thames 'Gateway' region.
  • We believe that decent affordable housing is a 'gateway' into a good quality of life for people on below average incomes.

Gateway Housing Association was formed in 2008 when Bethnal Green and Victoria Park Housing Association merged with Labo Housing Association. Gateway is now a well established community based housing association with some 2700 properties primarily in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Our early formation goes back to 1926 when we began life as Bethnal Green Housing Association. The first scheme at Queen Margaret Flats (still owned and managed by Gateway today) was opened in 1929.

We are uniquely the largest provider of sheltered housing and we have the third largest stock-holding of social housing within Tower Hamlets. We are particularly proud of the leasehold and shared ownership accommodation we provide which is low density and high quality. We have many positive attributes including the investment we make each year into community projects through the Betty May Gray Charity, our dedicated Resident Involvement Team who are leading the way in resident scrutiny, Academy 4 Housing – the community enterprise training company for which we are an investment partner, and the social activities we organise to improve older people’s well-being and to improve the life chances of young people.
