Celebrating Black History Month!

This October, we’ve had a fantastic month of celebrating Black History Month with our staff and residents.

Thank you to all those who joined us at our event on 24 October to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Empire Windrush  arriving in the UK.

We saw a live, interactive performance from Saleah, who arrived from Jamaica in the Windrush era.

She regaled us with her tales from Jamaica and 1950s London, and took us back in time with her props!

After enjoying some delicious Afro-Caribbean food, we all got into our rhythm with some African drumming.

Then came prize giving... congratulations to our young attendees who took part in the Creative Competition.

We saw fantastic entries based on the theme of 'Carnival' - everyone won a prize!

Special congratulations to Astrid who came first with her Carnival drawing and won a tablet!

Finally, we watched a short video interview with our resident Mr Lawrence, who arrived in the UK from Jamaica in the same year as the Empire Windrush. Mr Lawrence is now 99 years old!

Watch the video of Mr Lawrence here.
