Community Alcohol Partnership Mile End Launch

Community Alcohol Partnership Mile End Launch
On 11 January 2016, Tower Hamlet’s second Community Alcohol Partnership was launched, to be based this time in Mile End. The CAP programme aims to reduce the rate of crime and ASB linked to alcohol consumption in the area. The Partnership works with residents, retailers and local authorities.

The programme has been extremely successful across the UK. The first scheme in Tower Hamlets saw a 46% decrease in anti-social behaviour, 87% decrease in alcohol seizures from young people and an 80% decrease in youth disorder.

A big part of this work is diversionary activities for young people involved in underage drinking. Gateway STEP has been helping with this. Tower Hamlets Council, Gateway Housing Association and Sainsbury’s Whitechapel are working in partnership to provide a short training course for young people to teach them skills such as CV writing and interview practice, followed by two weeks of work experience in Sainsbury’s Whitechapel store. Participants in the STEP course finish with an accredited qualification from City and Guilds which is recognised internationally.

The new Mile End project will be an exciting opportunity for STEP to continue its good work with young people in the area.
