Employment session for Gateway residents

Employment session for Gateway residents

On Tuesday 27th January eight candidates from the Gateway Housing STEP programme took part in an employability workshop delivered by project mangers Abdul Ali and Humayan Khader from the ELBA Employment Works team, as part of a 5 week programme ‘My Journey to Success’.

The programme is a joint venture between Gateway STEP and ELBA’s Employment Works and Community Works teams, and will see candidates participate in a series of 5 workshops to increase employability skills and work towards a City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Employability Skills.

Abdul and Humayun delivered to a group made up of 8 candidates all from different backgrounds, different ages and different life experiences but they all lived in Tower Hamlets and all were looking to upskill themselves and land a job in the very near future.

Some of the topics covered included Job adverts and understanding what they mean, decoding what employers really want from job adverts, scam jobs including direct hiring, zero hour contracts including the myths and finally showcasing ELBA vacancies.

The candidates gained a real insight to what the employment market looks like and how to best apply for jobs that match their skill set. Abdul Ali commented “I was very pleased as we received tons of questions after the workshop and felt candidates were very motivated to find employment and knew which direction they wanted to go to further their careers”.

Neda Haghshenas, Employability and Engagement Coordinator at Gateway STEP said “It was a great a success and clients really enjoyed the session!” The candidate’s journey does not end there; subsequent sessions will cover confident communication skills, interview skills, CV writing skills and money management.
Once the candidates have successfully completed the course and gained their qualification, Abdul and Humayun will return to the group to screen candidates for live vacancies.
