Getting your home ready for colder days
As summer comes to an end and the weather starts to change, now is a good time to get your home ready for autumn.
A few simple checks can help keep your home safe, warm and comfortable in the months ahead.
Test your smoke alarms
Smoke alarms can save lives. We recommend testing your smoke alarms once a month by pressing the test button. The most common reason for a smoke alarm to stop working is a low or dead battery. If you have replaced your batteries and your alarm still isn’t working, please let us know as soon as possible.
Check your heating
Before the colder weather arrives, try turning your heating on to make sure it's working properly. If you're having problems with your heating or hot water, report it early so any repairs can be arranged before temperatures drop.
Let fresh air in
As the weather gets colder, it can be tempting to keep windows closed all the time. However, opening windows for a short time each day can help reduce condensation and prevent damp and mould from building up.
Keep communal areas clear
Fallen leaves can get slippery when wet. Please take extra care when walking outside and help keep communal walkways, balconies and shared spaces free from items that could cause trips or falls.
Report repairs early
Small problems can quickly become bigger ones during colder weather. If you notice a leak, damaged window, faulty extractor fan or another repair issue, please report it as soon as possible so we can help.
Look out for your neighbours
Autumn and winter can be a difficult time for some people. A friendly chat or checking in on a neighbour can make a real difference, especially for older residents or those who may need extra support.
