Residents' stories

Every resident has a story to tell.

Resident stories shine a light on the individuals, families and communities that make Gateway a vibrant and diverse place to live. From community initiatives and local events to personal journeys and success stories, these stories help showcase the positive impact residents have within their neighbourhoods.

We believe sharing real experiences helps build stronger connections, celebrate community spirit and inspire others to get involved. If you would like to share your story or nominate someone from your community, we would love to hear from you.

Jean's story

Jean's story

Jean has lived in five homes in the same block in the Isle of Dogs since 1938. We asked her about her life in her Gateway home:

"My Nan lived here when the Queen Mother came to open the development. Then, everyone knew everyone. Over the years, my Nan, Mum and brother all lived here. And this is where I raised my three children.

"I've never had any problems with Gateway. When I ring up, I know someone will come down and get the job done.

"I've only ever lived away for five years. And when a flat became available, my Mum let me know and I was able to move back.

"My first husband was the caretaker. When he passed away, I took over the job in the early 1970s while I was living on the estate. My second husband took over the job after me and was the caretaker for over 15 years.

"I enjoy when Gateway put on events so I can see the team. I'm joining in on a few other projects with Gateway in the community as well. It will be nice to meet my neighbours and others in the area."

Thanks, Jean.

Iain's story

Iain's story

Iain has lived in his Gateway home in the Isle of Dogs for over 26 years - the longest he's lived anywhere in his life. When we asked Iain about his experience with Gateway, he said:

"The company has definitely made improvements. For example, the change in contractors. I've seen a big improvement with people coming out to do work and giving it a really good check to make sure the job is done to stop people having to come out again in future.

"I've attended a few Gateway events over the last few years. I was impressed that Gateway was taking ownership for what they could do better.

"I have come along to events at community centres and at my home, but I've also attended consultations. In these meetings, I have shared my feedback on policies and strategies to make sure that resident feedback helps shape the decisions made at Gateway.

"It's always lovely to bump into the team. I appreciate that Gateway make the effort to put on events. If you're a Gateway resident, make sure you go along and share your feedback and see the the team."

Thanks, Iain.
