Remember, remember to keep safe this firework season
Fireworks can be a fun way to celebrate Bonfire Night, Diwali and other special occasions. But they can also be dangerous if you don't use them safely.
The London Fire Brigade recommends going to an organised public fireworks display instead of having your own at home. Public displays are safer and can be more enjoyable too.
If you are planning to use fireworks at home, here are some simple ways to help keep yourself, your family and your neighbours safe.
Before you start
- Only buy fireworks from a trusted seller. Look for the CE or UKCA mark on the packaging
- You must be 18 or over to buy or use fireworks
- Keep fireworks in a closed box
- Take them out one at a time when you are ready to use them
- Keep water nearby. Have a bucket of water or hose ready in case you need it.
When using fireworks
- Always read the instructions before lighting a firework. Remember:
- Light fireworks at arm's length and stand well back
- Never go back to a firework once it has been lit
- Never put fireworks in your pocket
- Never throw fireworks
- Keep cigarettes and other flames away from fireworks
- Keep rockets pointed well away from other people.
Keep children safe around sparklers
Sparklers may look harmless, but they can get extremely hot. The London Fire Brigade says you should never give sparklers to children under five. Anyone using a sparkler should:
- Wear gloves
- Hold it at arm's length
- Light one sparkler at a time
- Keep it away from other people
- Put it in a bucket of cold water when it has finished.
Think about your neighbours
Fireworks can be frightening for other people and animals. If you are having fireworks at home, please be considerate of your neighbours and follow the rules about when fireworks can be used.
For most of the year, fireworks cannot be set off between 11pm and 7am. Different cut-off times apply on Bonfire Night, New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year.
Stay safe and enjoy the celebrations
The safest option is to attend an organised public display. The closest display in East London is:
- Blackheath Fireworks
- Blackheath Common, Blackheath, SE3 0UA
- Saturday 7 November 2026, 5pm - 10pm.
If you choose to use fireworks at home, plan ahead, follow the instructions and look out for the people around you.
