Domestic abuse

Everyone has the right to feel safe in their home and relationships.
Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability or sexual orientation. If you are experiencing domestic abuse, or are worried about someone else, support is available and you are not alone. We will take your concerns seriously and work with you to help keep you safe.

What is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse is any pattern of behaviour used by one person to control, coerce, threaten, intimidate or harm another person with whom they have, or have had, a personal relationship.
Domestic abuse can include:

  • Physical abuse
  • Emotional or psychological abuse
  • Verbal abuse
  • Coercive or controlling behaviour
  • Financial abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Harassment or stalking
  • Online or digital abuse

Domestic abuse can happen between partners, former partners, family members or others living within the same household. It is never the fault of the person experiencing the abuse.

How do I report domestic abuse?

You can report domestic abuse by:

We understand that domestic abuse can be difficult to talk about. We will treat reports sensitively and confidentially wherever possible.

In an emergency
  • If you are in immediate danger, call 999.
  • If it is not safe to speak, you can make a Silent Solution call by dialling 999, then pressing 55 when prompted. This lets the police know that you need help but cannot talk.
  • For non-emergency police matters, call 101.
