Gateway does not tolerate hate behaviour, discrimination, harassment or abuse of any kind. If you are experiencing hate behaviour, or have seen it happening to someone else, please tell us.

What is hate behaviour?

Hate behaviour is any threatening, abusive, intimidating or criminal behaviour that targets someone because of who they are, or because someone believes they belong to a particular group. This can include: 

  • Verbal abuse 
  • Threatening behaviour 
  • Harassment 
  • Damage to property 
  • Offensive graffiti 
  • Online abuse 
  • Bullying or intimidation 
  • Physical assault. 
Who can be affected by hate behaviour?

Hate behaviour may be targeted because of a person's: 

  • Race or ethnicity 
  • Religion or belief 
  • Disability 
  • Sexual orientation 
  • Gender 
  • Gender identity or expression. 

Everyone should feel safe and respected in their neighbourhood, regardless of their background or personal characteristics. 

How do I report hate behaviour?

If you are worried about your own safety, or the safety of someone else, please contact us as soon as possible. 
You can report a safeguarding concern by: 

If it is safe to do so, try to record what happened, including dates, times and details of any witnesses. This information can help us investigate. 

 
In an emergency 
If someone is in immediate danger, a crime is taking place, or urgent medical assistance is needed, call 999 immediately. 
For non-emergency police matters, call 101.

There might be times when we need to share information with the police, social services or other agencies to protect you or someone else from harm. If we need to do this, we will explain why wherever possible.
