Mutual exchange

A mutual exchange allows social housing tenants to swap homes with another tenant. This can be a helpful option if your current home no longer meets your needs.

A mutual exchange is when two or more social housing tenants agree to swap homes.

You must get permission from all landlords involved before moving.

Who can apply?

You may be able to apply for a mutual exchange if:

  • You are a secure or assured tenant
  • Your rent account is clear or being managed appropriately
  • Your property is in good condition
  • There are no legal issues affecting your tenancy

Permission may be refused in some circumstances, such as serious tenancy breaches or under-occupation rules.
