Celebrating Black History Month - Norma Cassius

As we celebrate Black History Month 2024 and this year’s theme, Reclaiming Narratives, we are excited to highlight the stories and experiences of individuals in our community.
This theme is about amplifying voices and sharing journeys that inspire and empower.
Our Older People Money Management and Support Coordinator, Norma Cassius, works closely with customers in our Enhanced Housing Management Schemes. Norma’s role is focused on helping our customers navigate financial challenges, from managing rent arrears and debts to budgeting smartly and accessing benefits.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Norma shares, “In my early years, discussions about money were rare in the homes of African and Caribbean families. Money matters were considered ‘big people's business,’ and the guidance given to me and my siblings usually centred on securing employment and saving money.”
Despite these limited conversations, Norma learned valuable financial lessons from her parents, which shaped her approach to money management and her passion for helping others.
“I used each stumbling block as a stepping stone, propelling me to rise above and attain my goals.”
Norma’s story is a testament to the power of reclaiming one’s narrative by overcoming obstacles and helping others do the same. Her commitment to supporting our customers embodies the spirit of Reclaiming Narratives, using personal experience and expertise to make a positive impact in the community.
