Get your boiler ready for winter

Our gas and heating partners – K&T heating, have provided some top tips on how to maintain your boilers and advice on how to get winter ready.

Test it now – Most people typically switch their central heating on in October. You may only realise that a fault has developed in your boiler once you turn it on just before winter, and by this point, it may be too late for you to receive a prompt repair.

You should check that your boiler works while the weather is still relatively mild. You don’t need to use it for long – turn it on long enough for your radiators to heat up. If there is a problem, let us know so that we can check it over and make sure it’s working well.

Here are some tips to make sure your boiler is winter-ready.

Check your thermostats - A faulty thermostat can cause your room to be too hot or cold. It will not send a signal to the valve that allows the radiators to heat up.

Alternatively, a thermostat that cannot read the room temperature could make your home hotter and hotter, which can be very frustrating, as you may only be able to have your home extremely warm or cold.

Remember, some thermostats are battery-operated. Please check the batteries to see if the digital screen has no display.

Gas and electric meter credit - You must top up your electric meter and have enough credit for any heating system to work. The same applies to your gas prepayment meter if you have a gas central heating system. Make sure if there is a digital display, it reads ‘ON’.

A common fault is not topping the meter up correctly, and this will stop the meter from allowing gas to pass through.
