Our Board Members
Bala Mahendran has worked in Local Government since 1986. He was Chief Executive of Basildon Borough Council and former Chair of the Essex Chief Executive Association and the Basildon Community Safety Partnership. He was also the Deputy Chair of Prospects College of Advanced Technology (PROCAT). He is very much interested in housing, regeneration, and achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth. He joined the Gateway Board in October 2020 and was appointed Interim Chair of the Board in April 2022.
Kirsty is Chief Executive of The Mayor's Fund for London. Prior to that she was Chief Executive at the Employment Related Services Association (ERSA). She joined Gateway’s Board in October 2017, and brings experience working cross sector, with expertise in employment, education, regeneration, housing and welfare reform, disability and social sector issues.
Sultana Begum is a teacher and works for Greenwich Council. As a Gateway tenant, Sultana was a member of the Scrutiny Panel and joined Gateway’s Board in January 2017.
Shyam has held senior finance and operational positions across a variety of industries and most recently was UK CFO at Allen & Overy. He joined the Board in 2020.
Mark Miles Lea
Mark has worked in the housing association sector for over 25 years, specialising in development. Most recently he was Executive Director for Development & Sales at Optivo. He joined Gateway’s Board in 2018.
Frances joined the Board in 2019. She won the Tower Hamlets STAR award for Community Resident Engagement. She was an active member of the Repairs & Maintenance Leaseholder panel and has over 20 years experience in delivering community nutrition intervention programmes.
Nigel Wiles is a Chartered Building Surveyor and has worked in housing since 1984. Specialising in asset management and building safety, with a passion for delivering great maintenance services for residents. Most recently, Nigel was Director of Asset Management and Maintenance Strategy at L&Q Housing Trust. Nigel joined Gateway’s Board in 2020.
Mark previously worked as an investment manager at the Bank of England, Citibank, and Barclays. He has held several non-executive posts, including Chair of the Board at Fair Finance and Deputy Chair of the Board at the University of East London. He is an Honorary Professor at the Yunus Centre at Glasgow Caledonian University. Mark joined the Gateway Board in 2021.
Amarjit is the Programme Director for the homelessness support and prevention contracts across London.
She is a senior leader with extensive experience of delivering strategy, operations and transformation in both the private and public sectors. She is well versed at collaborating across diverse and multiple stakeholders, and has a proven track record of delivering growth of businesses to ensure successful social value and commercial outcomes.
Amarjit has held leadership roles for more than a decade, managing central government contracts, leading teams in social housing and the private sector. She is a board member at grassroots and mainstream organisations and an active member of Women in Social Housing (WISH).
Eugenia Korobova works at Pension Insurance Corporation plc (PIC) and focuses on sourcing high-quality investments in the social housing sector, where PIC has invested over £2bn. She previously worked as a Credit Analyst at PIC and Rothesay, covering the social housing sector, as well as at S&P Global Ratings covering both investment-grade and high-yield corporate issuers. She has an MSc in Economics and Business from the Stockholm School of Economics. Eugenia was appointed Independent Co-Optee to Gateway’s Risk & Audit Committee in Oct 2021.
